United Imaging's uMI Panorama GS Powers Breakthrough Systems Physiology Research at Mass General Brigham

A powerful new era of imaging research is emerging at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), thanks to United Imaging’s next-generation PET/CT technology. Researchers at the Martinos Center—part of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system—are now poised to simultaneously study multiple organ systems across the body in unprecedented detail, ushering in a new wave of discovery in systems physiology and integrative medicine.

The acquisition of the uMI Panorama GS PET/CT system from United Imaging marks a significant milestone. Enabled by grants from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this system provides a unique combination of high spatial resolution, sub-200 picosecond time-of-flight (TOF), and an expansive 148 cm PET axial field-of-viewdelivering sensitivity 40 times greater than traditional PET scanners.

Redefining Whole-Body Molecular Imaging

For Dr. Ciprian Catana, Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Molecular Imaging Core at the Martinos Center, this advancement represents the culmination of years of innovation in PET technology. His two recently awarded grants—Towards Integrative Medicine - Next-generation Whole-Body PET/CT to Study Interconnected Systems” and High Performance PET/CT Scanner”will support the deployment of the system, which is set to go live in summer 2025.

This powerful system gives us the ability to explore the interconnected functions of the brain, heart, gut, and other organs in ways never before possible,” says Dr. Catana.

With over 200 active researchers at the Martinos Center and growing demand for PET imaging, the new uMI Panorama GS is expected to play a critical role in studies that deepen our understanding of disease mechanisms and the complex communication between bodily systems.

A Strategic Collaboration for Scientific Discovery

The installation of the uMI Panorama GS is part of Mass General Brigham’s long-term vision to build a clinical translation research program leveraging ultra-sensitive, full-body imaging.

We are excited to support the vision at the Martinos Center,” says Abram Voorhees, PhD, Senior Director of Academic Alliances at United Imaging. “This work will yield both a greater understanding of the body and new clinical applications for advanced PET/CT at MGB.”

United Imaging, known for launching the world’s first total-body PET/CT scanner (uEXPLORER) in 2019, continues to lead in large axial field-of-view imaging systems. The uMI Panorama GS is the company’s latest step in driving innovation in molecular imaging and supporting the scientific community.

At United Imaging, we are committed to developing the next generation of imaging tools that power scientific discovery and help achieve our mission of Equal Healthcare for All™,” said Jeffrey M. Bundy, PhD, CEO of United Imaging North America.
